Brief History of the Department
The Department of English was established in the year 1978 and has now become a thriving interdisciplinary centre for study with an outstanding reputation at postgraduate level and beyond, attracting each year a varied contingent of students from across the country. We encourage crossing and re-crossing of boundaries between disciplines (literature, film, history, performing arts and visual arts) as inter-disciplinarily brings about a wide range of critical concepts and approaches. The teaching in the Department is lively, engaged and on the cutting edge of advances in theory and historical understanding. We impart a high level of practical skills which enhance scholarly work and ensure that our students are properly equipped for their post-university careers. We also try to foster individual initiators in learning and to make it an experience to be shared with fellow students and faculty.
The faculty members are highly qualified and are actively engaged in research and effective class-room teaching. With three members of academic staff, the Department teaches across the whole range of English Studies, from "Old English" to "Contemporary Poetry", from "Literary Theories and Practical Criticism" to "American Literature", from "Present Day English and Phonology" to "Literature and Other Arts", from "Indian Writing in English" to "Canadian Literature", including "World Classics in Translation" and "SAARC Literature". Our aim is to provide you with a stimulating environment in which you can develop your skills in all areas of English. We take pride in the fact that seminars are taught in small groups, where we can offer individual support.
